Canada was the second-largest export market for American spirits but has fallen to sixth place due to the ongoing trade war with the US. The US and Canada have been embroiled in a tariff dispute, with spirits in the crossfire.
Over the past 25 years, spirit imports into the US grew from approximately US$2.7 billion in 2000 to a peak of US$12.1bn in 2022. By 2025, when tariffs were largely implemented on imported spirits, the category saw a drop of about 30% below that peak to US$8.4bn.
“These tariffs on imported spirits are having a negative effect through the entire supply chain of the spirits sector, impacting importers, wholesalers, retailers, restaurants, bars, hospitality businesses and, of course, their employees – and this is important,” said Rob Maron, senior vice-president for international trade policy and market access at Discus.
“It’s because the spirit sector is a critical part of the US economy, generating more than US$250bn in annual economic activity, supporting 1.7 million jobs in the United States.”
In 2025, the 51 countries where the US spirits sector has zero-for-zero tariff agreements accounted for 81% of US spirits exports, and almost 100% of US imports.
The open trading environment helped US spirits exports grow “dramatically”, from around US$478m in 2000 to US$2.37bn in 2025.
However, in February 2025, US president Donald Trump applied 25% tariffs on a selection of Canadian goods. The following month, eight Canadian provinces cleared all American alcohol from their shelves.
