Nearly seven in 10 Canadians believe the government should maintain a boycott on American alcohol, a survey by Abacus Data revealed.

From 23-29 July, Abacus conducted an online survey of 1,363 adults living in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Atlantic Canada (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador).

Since March 2025, all but two Canadian provinces have removed American alcohol from shelves due to trade tensions with the US.

The survey showed that 69% of Canadians supported keeping government restrictions on the sale of American alcohol. Only 19% want American products returned to store shelves, while 11% are unsure.

The highest percentage supporting the ban came from British Columbia (72%), followed by Ontario and Atlantic Canada at 69%, and Manitoba at 63%.

The boycott is also backed the most by those aged 60 and over (78%), followed by consumers aged 30 to 44 (60%).

More than eight in 10 Liberal and New Democratic Party voters support keeping the restrictions, at 83% and 84% respectively. Conservative voters were more split at 53% in favour of keeping the restrictions, while 33% wanted them lifted and 14% were unsure.

The dispute escalated last month when US president Donald Trump announced 50% tariffs on certain Canadian products partly due to the nation’s booze ban. Trump plans for the new tariff to come into force on 29 August.

When respondents are told about the new 50% tariffs and that provincial alcohol restrictions were cited as one justification, 54% say the restrictions should remain until the US removes its tariffs, even if that results in further retaliation.

Another 19% would keep the restrictions permanently, regardless of what happens with tariffs. Only 19% would lift them to ease trade tensions.

Furthermore, six in 10 Canadians believe that their government should resist US pressure even if it leads to higher economic costs.

Abacus Data CEO David Coletto said the survey findings “suggest provincial governments have considerable public room to keep American alcohol off their shelves”.

However, he noted: “This is not simply about wine, beer, or spirits. The results reflect a broader public instinct that Canada should not reward economic pressure with immediate concessions. Most people would rather accept some risk of retaliation than remove a countermeasure without securing something in return.

“But the political coalition is not uniform. Younger adults and Conservative voters are more open to de-escalation. Governments therefore have support to hold the line, but they will still need to show that these measures are purposeful, proportionate, and connected to a credible negotiating strategy.”
