Mohan Meakin Group attended a court hearing on Monday (31 August) to challenge the FSSAI (The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) ban on sales of select products.

The FSSAI, which regulates food safety in India, banned the sale of three Old Monk Rum varieties earlier this year.

The varieties include The Legend, Gold Reserve, and XXX Matured Rum, the latter of which carries a seven-year age statement. All three rums are produced at the company’s subsidiary, Mohan Rocky Springwater, in Khopoli, Maharashtra.

In the notice, the FSSAI alleged that the labelling of Old Monk’s ‘seven years old blended’ rum is misleading. Laboratory reports by the regulator found that the rum’s main ingredient is neutral (unmatured/unaged) spirit, while matured rum spirit makes up less than 5% of the blend.

Therefore, Old Monk’s labelling was found to violate existing FSSA regulations regarding age claims, which must reflect the youngest spirit in the blend.
