Among people who drank on 4 July, consumption averaged nearly five drinks per person, more than on Christmas Day.

The data comes from Reframe, an alcohol-reduction app, which asks users to log their alcohol consumption. Its data reflects app users who are working to change their drinking and is therefore not a nationally representative sample. Independence Day had the highest level of alcohol consumption in 2026, and was second only to New Year's Eve in the past 12 months. It was also the biggest summer drinking day in the four summers Reframe has tracked. On 4 July, 53% of daily check-ins on the app were to log alcohol drinking, making it the only clear drinking-majority day of the summer. Two days later, this number fell to 31%. However, many Reframe users went against the tide and participated in the app's Dry and Damp July challenge, which encourages people to quit or cut back on alcohol. The median Dry and Damp July challenge participant reduced their alcohol consumption by 55% compared with June. Roughly one in four participants went completely alcohol-free. The challenge featured four daily activities, including a guided journal reflection and a daily tracker. 'Dry' participants aimed for full abstinence, while 'Damp' participants set moderation goals. The app also asks people to log when they are craving alcohol, with 43% of summer cravings being logged between 4pm and 7pm, and peaking at 5pm. Tuesday and Wednesday were the days with the highest level of alcohol craving, and Saturday was the lowest. However, Saturday is the week's biggest drinking day, with roughly twice Monday's alcohol. Reframe also asks for the drivers behind cravings, with 24% stating 'habit, routine, or time of day'. Meanwhile, 'social situations' drove just around 4%. Of those using the app to quit alcohol, 65% slipped up between days one and seven. Those who cleared week one alcohol-free finished the whole month dry 79% of the time. "Everyone talks about summer drinking as a willpower contest at the barbecue," said Vedant Pradeep, co-founder and CEO of Reframe. "The data says the real battle is quieter, such as 5pm on a Tuesday, the Monday after the long weekend or the first seven days of any attempt to change. "Dry and Damp July gave people structure for exactly those moments, and the participants who used it cut their drinking by more than half in a single month." Earlier this week, it was revealed that global alcohol deaths had fallen by 26%.
